Yemen Child BrideJournalist Delphine Minoui helped child Nujood recount her story in the book called 'I Am Nujood, Age 10 and Divorced.'
Description
In Yemen, roughly half of all girls get married before they're 18, and some brides are as young as 8 years old. When she was 10, Nujood Ali's father married her to a 30-year-old man.
Too young to understand what was happening, Nujood suffered at the hands of her new husband. But after a few months of abuse, Nujood made history by doing the unthinkable — she went by herself before a judge and said, "I want a divorce." It was granted, and Nujood has since inspired other child brides to seek divorce.
Delphine Minoui, a French author who wrote a book about Nujood’s case, speaks with host Peggy Wehmeyer.
