Many girls stay home while menstruating, missing critical education every month and even dropping out.

In Kenya, a project has been working to donate sanitary pads to girls in two of Nairobi's poorest slums. Michael Kaloki reports.

And in South Africa, Paul Kromhout discusses the success of the Protecting Futures Initiative in South Africa, which educates girls about their menstrual cycle and provides them with resources to help keep them in school.

Music for this show ...
http://www.worldvisionreport.org//index.php?option=com_stories&id=1596 Pads for Girls Sun, 05 Sep 2010 12:18:12 PDT http://www.worldvisionreport.org//index.php?option=com_stories&id=1593
Only three years ago, Kenya experienced large-scale violence after a disputed election reawakened tribal tensions. But the country has come a long way in three years — a new constitution was signed into law on August 27. The charter, which was peacefully approved by two-thirds of voters earlier in the month, marks a major new direction for the country.

Reporter Ernest Waititu is in Nairobi and spoke with Peggy Wehmeyer by phone.

Music for this show ...
http://www.worldvisionreport.org//index.php?option=com_stories&id=1593 Kenya's Constitution Sun, 05 Sep 2010 12:18:12 PDT http://www.worldvisionreport.org//index.php?option=com_stories&id=1598
Most children in India's slums have to work to support their families, and often live far from the nearest school. At a young age, her father intended her to drop out of school and marry a local boy, but Ntaiya knew she wanted more. She negotiated with her father and convinced him to let her go to secondary school. The deal she struck then led eventually to college in the United States.

She was the first girl from her village to leave and continue her education. Now, she's giving back: she founded a school for girls.

Host Peggy Wehmeyer spoke with Kakenya Ntaiya, a winner of the National Geographic Emerging Explorers Award, about her journey.

Music for this show ...
http://www.worldvisionreport.org//index.php?option=com_stories&id=1600 Kenyan Girls' School Sun, 05 Sep 2010 12:18:12 PDT http://www.worldvisionreport.org//index.php?option=com_stories&id=1626
Most consumer products in America are manufactured overseas and shipped to the United States, arriving on big cargo ships. All these ships are manned by mariners, about 1.2 million globally, and while they're out to sea, they have to eat.

These mariners hail from all corners of the world, and usually each ship has only one cook to feed all the crew. That cook may have one of the toughest jobs on board.

Reporter Chris Burrell climbed aboard the Reykjafoss on the Mystic River near Boston for this story.

Music for this show ...
http://www.worldvisionreport.org//index.php?option=com_stories&id=1626 Ship's Cook Sun, 05 Sep 2010 12:18:12 PDT
